Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained operational.
